Quick Learning

What is Sustainability Reporting or ESG Reporting ?

Sustainability reporting is a form of non-financial reporting that enables companies to convey their progress toward goals on a variety of sustainability parameters, including environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics, as well as risks and impacts they may face, at the moment or in the future.

What is the Purpose of ESG / Sustainability Reporting ?

Sustainability reporting is valuable not only because it enables a business to identify risks and opportunities that may impact its long-term performance, but also because it can help improve transparency and enhance brand image. By reporting on sustainability, companies can mitigate impacts from potential ESG risks, reduce waste and thereby increase cost savings, ensure they are in compliance with regulatory requirements and make more effective strategic decisions.

What is Supply Chain Sustainability ?

Global supply chain sustainability efforts focus on goals that are environment friendly, improve resource optimisation and retain or increase ROI at the same time. Sustainable chain management is put into practice right from the procurement of goods and services to delivering the right products at the right time.

Sustainable supply chain is a strategic business decision that includes sustainable sourcing, production, packaging, and optimized, responsible delivery of produced goods. SCM sustainability efforts under an enterprise’s corporate social responsibility activities also drive green operations and result in cost savings and an improved supply chain over the long term.

What are the Types of ESG Reporting / Sustainability Reporting ?

Different types of sustainability reporting standards exist. Some of the more widely used frameworks for reporting on sustainability and ESG impacts include India's Business Responsibility and Business Reporting(BRSR), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

ESG Reporting Standards or Frameworks

For organizations, selecting which sustainability reporting standards and frameworks to use is an important early step on the path to improving your environmental performance. Generally, it's better to focus on doing a few things well instead of trying to do everything, so we recommend starting with a few established standards to prioritize. Using established, independent sustainabilty standards can help your organization set goals, establish priorities, measure performance and progress, anticipate risks, and managing change. Increasingly, many companies, including Amazon, Walmart, Nike, Disney, and Target survey their vendors and suppliers for sustainability information about their business.

India’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR)

A framework for ESG reporting in India, BRSR represents a significant revolution from the Business Responsibility Reporting (BRR) voluntary guidelines set out in 2009. Today’s global reporting arena necessitated more refined standards to enhance sustainability disclosures and promote transparency and accountability among Indian companies.

EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)

Is an update to the Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) which takes effect in 2024 and broadens mandatory EU sustainability reporting standards for most companies. The goal of CSRD is to make corporate sustainability reporting more common, standards-based, and closer to financial accounting and reporting.

Integrate SASB metrics to align your sustainability reporting with industry-specific ESG factors and investor expectations.

International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)

A global format for sustainability and climate reporting that meets the needs of CFOs and investors. The first IFRS S1 and S2 standards were released in June 2023. While newer, given the IFRS's influence role in financial reporting, these standards should help connect sustainability reporting information with a company's financial statements and accounting.
